Escape Room Installation

Why an Escape Room?

An escape room is “a game in which participants confined to a room or other enclosed setting are given a set amount of time to find a way to escape” (Merriam-Webster). There are two versions:

1)    A kit that can be checked out through the library and set up anywhere at the college.

2)    A permanent installation at one building.

I created an escape room for educational purposes. Under time pressure, participants will work together to solve a series of puzzles relating to a discipline or principle. This will optimize group dynamics, develop problem-solving skills, and enhance understanding of concepts presented.

Inside the Escape Room

Empathy

Learners benefit from active learning and gamification when it is tied to clear objectives and outcomes. I have observed an increase in engagement, thinking outside the box, and critical thinking skills when I employ it in my classroom or participate in it as a professional. Coming out of a time of social distancing, people desire to connect with each other and experience learning in ways that are not passive.

Tools

I sourced materials through the following:

·      IdeaStudio maker space at WHI – technicians helped me design and make puzzle boxes and ciphers (3-D printed), banners (vinyl printed), and other items (laser cut boxes, etc.)

·      Buy Nothing Facebook group – an open call for “vaguely Victorian items for a DIY escape room” yielded a lot of fun things!

·      Hardware stores, Amazon, party and home good stores – thematic and practical elements (table coverings, locks, etc.)

·      Online supply – purchased dividers

Reception

Feedback from students and colleagues in the testing phases has been overwhelmingly positive. One professor said this was the most engaged his students had been the entire semester. Several tweaks have made the game enjoyable and challenging.

I look forward to many more groups playing the game! Student organizations, division chairs, classes, and more plan to use the room in the coming year.
