Student Online Portfolios

In an effort to incorporate marketable skills more obviously into my course, I included an online portfolio this term. Utilizing the free Bulb platform, students set up their sites, added to them throughout the semester, then shared them at the end of the course.

First, early in the semester, students set up their sites. I asked them to create a resume as well, with the view of sharing it with a future employer. I did give them a grade for the set-up, which I evaluated for professionalism and style.

Second, students added collections for their assignments. This term, they wrote one piece of an annotated bibliography per week and added it to the site. They also created a poster about one of their monographs and added it to the site.

Finally, students had the opportunity to fine-tune and edit their site before turning it in as a final project.

I have encouraged students to continue to add to their portfolios with creative work, exemplary projects, etc.

The Bulb app was easy and free to use. Here is an example that I made and shared with the students.

Note: You can require that students keep their portfolio private so that only the people with whom they share the link can view it. This is important if students are posting the same assignment.
